Derived from ancient Yoga Asanas, the Pilate s(originally named Contrology) exercise system was formulated by Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates devised a series of exercise and training techniques, specifications and engineered equipment to teach his methods correctly and safely. The Pilates method of exercise is a unique system of stretching and strengthening resulting in a body that is stronger and better balanced.

Pilates develops body awareness, improving and changing the body’s postural and alignment habits, also increasing flexibility and ease of movement.

Pilates is an extremely safe form of exercise recommended by many medical specialists. The core fundamentals of the pilates method are based upon a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the human body.

The classes are mostly performed standing or lying down on the mat, sometimes using small pieces of equipment or sitting on a ball. It is your own body working against gravity that provides the biggest challenge.

Each class lasts up to 60 minutes although this can vary for small groups and private sessions.

There are a maximum 12 spaces allocated for each group class – it’s always advisable to book via email or phone to ensure you secure a place. Alternatively, you can arrange for 1-2-1 classes. These can be perfect for beginners to gain more understanding of the pilates principles before entering a class environment.
